How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and 11

Windows doesn’t always open iPhone photos out of the box, which makes converting HEIC to JPG feel harder than it should. It isn’t: here are four reliable methods for Windows 11 and 10, plus what to do on Windows 7 and how to convert from the command line.

Fastest option, no installs: open the HEIC to JPG converter in Edge or Chrome, drop your photos in, and download the JPGs. The conversion happens on your PC — nothing is uploaded.

First: can your PC read HEIC?

Double-click a HEIC file. If it opens in the Photos app, you’re ready for methods 1 and 2. If you see an error, a “get the extension” prompt or a blank thumbnail, Windows is missing the codec. You can either:

More troubleshooting is in How to open HEIC files on Windows 11 and 10.

Method 1: Paint

Reliable on both Windows 10 and 11 once the codecs are installed.

  1. Right-click the HEIC file → Open with → Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → JPEG picture.
  3. Pick a name and folder and click Save.

Paint doesn’t offer a quality slider and doesn’t keep EXIF metadata, so the date taken won’t carry over.

Method 2: The Photos app

  1. Open the HEIC in Photos.
  2. Open the … (See more) menu and choose Save as (in some versions this is under Edit or File).
  3. In Save as type, choose .jpg, then click Save.

Menu wording varies a little between Photos versions, but the Save as dialog always lets you pick the file type.

Method 3: Your browser (no installs)

Works on any Windows PC, including locked-down work machines.

  1. Open convertheicto.com/jpg in Edge, Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Drag your HEIC files onto the page (or click Choose photos).
  3. Download each JPG or click Download all as ZIP.

Unlike Paint, this keeps the date taken and camera info, removes GPS location by default, and fixes rotation. It can also produce PDF, PNG and other formats.

Method 4: Command line (ImageMagick)

For power users and large batches, ImageMagick for Windows can read HEIC. After installing it, open Command Prompt or PowerShell in the folder with your photos:

# one file
magick IMG_1234.heic IMG_1234.jpg

# every HEIC in the folder, quality 90
magick mogrify -format jpg -quality 90 *.heic

mogrify writes the JPGs next to the originals. For more bulk options see How to batch convert HEIC to JPG.

Right-click converters

Tools like CopyTrans HEIC for Windows add a “Convert to JPEG” option to File Explorer’s right-click menu. It’s popular and free for home use; we look at it in detail in CopyTrans HEIC for Windows: is it safe?

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 7

Microsoft never released HEIC support for Windows 7, so Paint and Photos can’t help. Your options:

  • A browser converter — works as long as your browser is reasonably recent.
  • Third-party desktop tools that still list Windows 7 support. Check the vendor’s site before installing, and download only from the official source.

Stop getting HEIC files on your PC

If you copy photos from an iPhone over USB, set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic on the iPhone. Windows will receive JPGs automatically. Other options are in How to turn off HEIC on iPhone.
